Marcellus Shale

The Marcellus Shale is a Devonian black shale that is found throughout the Appalachian Basin. The Marcellus Shale is a highly productive natural gas reservoir when subjected to massive hydraulic fracture treatment in New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The most productive parts of the Marcellus Shale are found where the shale is thick and the thermal maturity is high.

The high organic content of the Marcellus Shale is evident from the high gamma-ray signature of the shale on logs over the formation:

The Marcellus Shale is very siliceous and calcareous with a low clay content, which makes the shale brittle and enables the formation to respond well to massive hydraulic fracture stimulation.
